English/Nat Botswana's Aids crisis is getting worse, with one in four infected with the HIV virus. Now the country's first laboratory and training centre devoted exclusively to the advanced study of HIV, has opened in the capital, Gaborone. Before last week, Botswana could not even do H-I-V testing itself. Blood samples had to be sent over the border to South Africa. Now, not only is testing possible, but thanks to a new research laboratory, Botswana will be able to find out how to stop the rapid spread of one of the most prolific types of H-I-V. Most of the world's H-I-V research has examined H-I-V-1B, the subtype found mostly in developed nations. But Subtype C of H-I-V-1 is responsible for more than half of all the world's H-I-V infections. This subtype, about which little is known, is blazing across southern Africa, today infecting a much larger fraction of local populations that the other subtypes. Its prevalence and its rapid spread suggests a greater potential for causing larger epidemics that any other H-I-V strain the world has experienced. The laboratory and research project has been opened as a result of a joint venture between the Botswana government, Harvard University and "Secure The Future," a project of the Bristol-Meyers Squibb company. Secure The Future's financial grant for the laboratory was $4.9-million. They will also commit $13.3-million for medicines used in the study. Botswana's Health Minister Professor Joy Phumaphi was on hand to launch the Botswana-Harvard H-I-V Reference Laboratory. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In Botswana in particular the epidemic has taken on proportions that we never anticipated at the beginning of the epidemic. We are facing a situation where a lot of our trained human resources which, if you remember in Botswana we are trained through the taxpayers' money: Education is free up to university, and a lot of these trained human resources are dying." SUPER CAPTION: Professor Joy Phumaphi, Botswana Health Minister As a result of H-I-V and AIDS, life expectancy in Botswana is expected by 2020 to decline by 20 years, a level last seen in the 1940s. Currently, almost 40 percent of all pregnant women in Botswana are infected with HIV. The Harvard AIDS Institute was created in 1988 to expedite and expand the AIDS research conducted at Harvard University and its affiliated hospitals. The Institute is committed to finding solutions to the HIV epidemic in Africa and has created some of the longest standing research collaborations on the continent. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Here in Southern Africa there is very little information about how HIV virus will change when it's challenged with drugs. And we think that the research down here, sponsored by the Ministry of Health and advised by Harvard scientists, will help us understand how to combat the virus and how to predict its path of genesis in the future." SUPER CAPTION:Professor Monty Montana/Harvard AIDS Institute Secure the Future is a $100-million initiative by Bristol-Myers Squibb in collaboration with five governments, UNAIDS, the Harvard AIDS Institute; Baylor College of Medicine, and the Medical University of South Africa. The aim is to help women and children with HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa.
